Copper Roofing (Metal Material)

Copper roofing is becoming more and more popular these days. Not only does it looks distinct and classy, because it's a metal material, it lasts a lifetime!

There are a couple rumors that are not true regarding copper roofing.
1) Copper roofs are louder (in the case of rain/sleet/snow)
2) Metal roofs attract lightning

Both of these are not true, contrary to what some might think. The truth is, copper roofs have many benefits over traditional roofing materials. For instance, snow slides off copper, whereas with most other materials, the snow accumulates and collapses the roof. Also, copper roofing does not need to be replaced like most other types.

Metal material (such as copper roofs) are usually more expensive to install, but they last much longer (sometime forever) and are lightweight. Not to mention, copper is not prone to insects and rodents eating it, nor will it ever grow fungus, mold, or mildew like other roofing materials.

Here is some environmentally good news: The copper material is usually made from 75% recycled copper, AND all copper is 100% recyclable!

There are several different styles and shapes when it comes to metal roofing (since metal is easily mend and bendable). For instance, you can use copper shingles much like any other roofing material shingle, or cover the corners of your house with ridge caps, or use a shape called valleys which can direct water in any direction.

One interesting topic in copper roofing is the way it "weathers". Copper is resistant to water (that is, water does not corrode or eat into the shingles) but it does oxidize. What does that mean? Basically, over time, copper turns different colors. Here are five pictures which show how copper changes colors over time:
