Your Roof: Much More Than Meets The Eye
A standard sloped or “ridge” roof is not just the shingles or tile you see on top, it consists of several components, starting with the structural framing:
- Rafters and/or Trusses– Wooden beams that sit on the tops of your walls and meet at the center.
- Purlins – These are horizontal supports, common in pre-fab metal and some timber frame construction
- Tie and Collar Beams – These prevent the main rafters from spreading and forcing the walls apart
There are many other types of supporting posts, beams, and trusses. All this together provides a solid foundation for the part of the roof you see from the street.
Weatherproofing Materials: Tons Of Choices
So you’ve got a solid frame, all your rafters, joists, etc. are in good shape and you’re ready to put the skin on.
This is the part you’re most likely familiar with.
Most roof construction in Maryland consists of asphalt shingles—
--But there are A BUNCH of material options for your roof, so decide what you need and what you can afford.
And try to have some fun with it!
- Shingles (or “Shakes”) – Again, the most standard type of Maryland roofing. But there are actually several types of shingles, not just the short-lived asphalt/tar jobs you’re used to. Wood shingles can be an attractive, durable option, and can make your home stand out on the block.
- Tile (ceramic or concrete) - Beautiful, durable, and easy to repair. Tile is relatively uncommon in Maryland, but really is an attractive option. Costs a bit more, but lasts a LOT longer, and can significantly reduce your cooling costs in the summer.
- Slate – It isn’t cheap but boy does it last!
- Metal – You can get metal roofs in all kinds of styles (flat-seamed or shingles) and alloys (steel, aluminum, tin, and many others). Also not inexpensive on the up-front investment, but metal roofing lasts a LONG time.
