Replacement Windows & Door Installation

Replacement Windows Approximate Cost

You may have heard about the new tax credit being offered to people who replace the old windows in their homes, and now you’re wondering about replacement windows approximate cost.

This is totally understandable - even with a tax credit, the full installation of new windows can be an expensive undertaking. It really depends on how many windows you have, the size and quality of the windows you need to buy, and of course, who you’re using to do the installation.

What is the Tax Credit?

This tax credit is a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. In it, President Obama declared an emphasis on improving America’s infrastructure, and part of the many renovations and upgrades it promotes is the replacement of old windows with new, Energy Star approved windows.

Just think, if even half of all U.S. homes replaced their old windows with “Low-E”, energy efficient replacement windows, the amount of money saved in energy costs in the country would be staggering.

How much does the Tax Credit cover?

The tax credit covers either 30% of the total costs of the windows or a flat $1500, whichever comes sooner. This is a pretty generous boon to any American’s tax bill, but on its own, it is still not much of a dent in the cost of a serious window replacement project.

If you consider the amount of money you’ll save in energy costs, combined with the tax credit, then it starts to seem a little more beneficial. You can save hundreds per year on energy costs if your old windows were not doing a very good job of insulating your house from outside air.

What is the Average Cost of Replacement Windows?

So, what are the replacement windows approximate cost, on average? Unfortunately, this is a difficult statistic to come up with because it varies so much based on your specific circumstance (replacement window price comparison). However, as a general rule, you’ll be paying between $300 and $700 for a window if the frame in your home is intact. You might pay up to $1000 depending on the quality.

They are not called replacement windows if the frames are too damaged to be used or repaired; in this case, they are called construction windows. Hopefully you don’t have this problem, because it can add almost 100% to the cost of each window.

If you have a small home with no more than ten windows, the cost will probably stay under $10,000 total, and could be much less depending on the type of window you choose as a replacement. Larger homes might run you up to $20,000, and very large homes are even more expensive.

Keep in mind, also, that having a non-standard window size or shape can make the costs go up if it’s not readily available for the window installer you’ve hired.
